The European Commission-funded project ICOS (IoT2cloud Operating System) is seeking proposals for its second Open Call programme. Up to 15 innovative projects from SMEs and mid-cap companies will be selected to develop and integrate their technology into the ICOS system, receiving €60,000 in funding and 6 months of support from ICOS partners to integrate the solution.

ICOS https://www.icos-project.eu/ seeks to provide solutions to the complexities posed by the continuum paradigm, including device volatility and heterogeneity, virtualization of continuum infrastructure, diverse network connectivity, service scalability, optimized performance, resource consumption, security, privacy, and more. By fostering openness, adaptability, and data sharing, ICOS aims to establish a future edge market scenario for services and data while minimizing integration costs and mitigating cloud provider lock-in effects.

The core objectives of the ICOS project include:

  • Designing and developing a meta operating system for the continuum.
  • Ensuring optimized and scalable service execution, performance, and resource consumption.
  • Establishing trust, security, and privacy for IoT devices and cloud services.
  • Reducing integration costs and cloud lock-in effects.
  • Creating a data-driven ecosystem for future edge market scenarios

In order to achieve its goals, the ICOS project is looking for technology providers (SMEs/midcaps) developing services/products in the sectors of the ICOS PILOT use cases and the use cases proposed by the projects from the 1st Open Call. The 2nd Open Call winners will on board their applications and services to the ICOS system as well as test the ICOS functionalities and performance to improve the ICOS final product.

Benefits for Selected Projects:

  • €60,000 in funding per project
  • 6 months of support from ICOS partners to integrate the solution

Who Can Apply?

  • Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) or mid-cap companies acting as technology providers registered before September 30, 2024, in an EU member state, its Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT), or a Horizon Europe Associated Country.
  • Technology providers with solutions applicable to one of the following sectors:
    • Agriculture robotics
    • Railway monitoring
    • Automotive multimedia management
    • Domestic energy management
    • Structural health monitoring
    • Smart cities
    • Smart grid energy management
    • Climate and space weather
    • Occupational safety

Project Requirements:

  • Proposals must leverage the ICOS platform functionalities and contribute to enhancing the ICOS system by testing the platform and its technologies.
  • Open-source technology development is highly encouraged, aligning with ICOS's open-source nature.
  • Projects should target Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 at the application stage, aiming to reach TRL 5 by program completion. (TRL definitions can be found in the Guide for Applicants )

The eligible candidates can submit their applications through the FundingBox microsite created for this purpose by filling up an easy online application form. Submission starts on 10th July 2024 at 9:00 (CEST) Deadline is on the 30th September 2024 at 17:00 (CEST).

In this microsite they will also find the Guide for Applicants among other important documents which will be constantly updated while the open call is running. The applicants can access a dedicated Open Call Help Desk or via email at icos@fundingbox.com.
